Coco Rosie

On Wednesday September 16th, France/NY’s nomadic sisters act Coco Rosie played a show at the Vancouver’s Red Room in promotion of their new full-length album anticipated in 2010, CJSF volunteer Lise Monique reviews...

The nights that I feel like getting out of my home can be compared to watching molasses coming out of a carton, eventually wanting to give up, stay in, and read a new novel or watch the food network. Knowing that Coco Rosie was playing on a gloomy falls eve, I was determined to spice my wardrobe up, put on red lipstick and get my ass down to the Red Room.

The Lovely Feathers with The Racoons

Yes, it was a blistering thirty-eight degrees yesterday, and no, the Railway Club most certainly did not have air conditioning. But did that stop The Lovely Feathers from ripping off their shirts, sweating profusely, and rocking the socks off every devoted fan that stuck around and endured the heat for the chance to dance like seizing madmen? Not one freaking bit.

For British Eyes Only

Two words: cute and fun. If I had to completely summarize Vancouver’s local band, For British Eyes Only, this would be them in simplest terms. But let me elaborate…

Cute, like you want to cover them in strawberry ice cream and lick them down head to toe; like you could pinch their sweet cheeks until they went black from blood loss; like you just can’t control the stupid goofy grin on your face when you watch them.

DRMHLLR

Tamara Lee, reviewer and photographer, attends and documents the DRMHLLR show at the Media Club...

Standing before the stage at their recent Media Club show, I knew I was about to hear an anomaly for local bands. This four-man show known as DRMHLLR, is one of few bands around town that is entirely instrumental. Not only are they minus vocals, but their sound could be unusually classified as the indy-rock genre, rather than electro-pop or experimental jazz, where many of their instrumental siblings hang out.

Luv-A-Fair

I had my first hint that Luvafair was something special when a few years ago, at a Sisters of Mercy show, a fellow dancing maniacally to 'Temple of Love' stepped on my toes and screamed at me, "This is just like Luvafair! You're too young to know what that is!"
