On a small island off the main Fogo Island, I got the opportunity to hike up one of the corners of the earth, called Brimstone Head, which is a mountainous outcrop of rock with steep terrain on both sides, dropping down to the water. This was alleged to be one of the four corners of the earth for those who believe the earth is flat. It was a nice hike with lots of stairs and a beautiful view of the icebergs, harbour, Atlantic Ocean and the island. At the top of Brimstone Head, we met Iris Taylor who is the current president of the Flat Earth Society of Canada. She presented research papers pulled out of her bag that showed experiments to prove that the earth was flat. Her main point was showing us that it is important not just to believe what people say, but to actually find ways to experience things for yourself and experiment to prove what people are saying is true. Through your own discovery, you can make a judgement on whether something is true or not, rather than rely on what others say.
