radio on the radio

Monday September 24th

This week we banded together with our sisters and brothers in radio arms to create a massive orgy of explosive radio goodness.

Here’s an approximate order of the stations played, with links to the ones I could find or remember as well as the shows that were on for that time. Shows were mixed together, with as many as 7 stations being played simultaneously at varying volumes.

  • CiTR 101.9 Vancouver - Let’s Get Baked. Syndicated cooking show out of CKDU Halifax featuring musicians. They made potato salad with Joel Plaskett on the episode before this one!
  • CFRO 102.7 Vancouver - Blue Monday w/ Joni. All-female music; so kickass!
  • CJSR 88.5 Edmonton - Ransom Radio w/ Craig D. Played electro
  • CJSW 90.9 Calgary - The Banshee Beat
  • CKDU 88.1 Halifax - Radio Numerica w/Troy Richter. CKDU’s charts show!
  • CJAM 91.5 Windsor - Productive Confusion
  • CKXU 88.3 Lethbridge - ??? Two people talking about strong winds and gophers.
  • Samurai.FM Tokyo - Some seriously awesome glitchy hip-hop stuff was playing.
  • Radio Free Africa
  • Completely random Austrian campus radio station
  • KEXP 90.3 Seattle - Yo La Tengo’s song Autumn Sweater was playing on Kevin Cole’s Variety Mix! Nice.. The guy used to DJ parties for Prince and mixed R.E.M. the first time they played live in Minneapolis.
  • SOMA FM San Francisco
  • Unknown radio station out of Rio de Janeiro
  • ANETRADIO Antarctica -Really just a streaming playlist of songs
  • Unknown Saudi Arabian station
  • BBC Radio 4 - Some old white guys were talking about money and how to spend it before their imminent deaths.

Next week, I do something similar but call in to their show so that I’m on their station which is being played on my show… strange plans, yeah, but what’s so strange about that?

Award Value - 450 Watts

Wasted September 17th

This week, we played program 6 of Radio Radio. Download it for free here.

PROGRAM 6: JOHN OSWALD

John Oswald’s 1989 CD Plunderphonics spawned a new category of music which samples not just pop songs, but their cultural contexts as well. Since then Oswald has refined his “electroquoting” on the CDs Greyfolded, Electrax, Discosphere, Plexure and the recently released Plunderphonics box set. In his Radio Radio program he talks about the legal machinations that have surrounded his work and plays a range of examples.

Ended the show with the Negativland track The Playboy Channel from 1987’s Escape From Noise.

Bear Division

A vision in white encapsulated in shifting green. The Waste Land turns to dust; a bowl cradling a cigarette disintegrates to ashes, western winds swirling into the centre of the sun. A man becomes beast

No bears this week due to remote-broadcast equipment being too remote. Bears will return, fiercer than ever; possible sighting of half-polar half-grizzly all-ferocious mega-bear. S-Cat135 co-hosts with Rhino1986-2000-145 for the weather forecast next week.

CIRO Kelowna

The July 2nd show is a rebroadcast of an interview I did with Lucy and Cam from CiRO in Kelowna. Kelowna, at the moment, has ZERO Campus OR Community stations - astounding considering its population of 162 000. They’re trying to get an FM license ASAP because there are only two good spots on the Kelowna-area dial and they’re being auctioned off by the CRTC to commercial stations and the CBC.

One of the NCRC sessions was a Q&A with the CRTC’s Manager of English Radio Operations Joe Aguiar. Cam repeatedly questioned Mr. Aguiar on why Kelowna, with its sparse availability of frequencies, was being denied the chance to have a grassroots radio station. In response he received questions to his questions

Check out the CiRO website at ciro.ca. If you’re in Kelowna, show your support by donating your time or money.

Next week we’ll be chasing bears through Burnaby Mountain Park.
